Backlit Canyon Study #3
Description
During our time at the Grand Canyon this year, I spent time over two weeks, studying the light as it rose and fell over the canyon.
It became apparent that the complexities of these shapes and spaces needed to be simplified drastically. I still wasn't satisfied with the resulting landscapes because the focus was too much on the shapes. After that, I decided to focus on just the light pouring into the canyon.
Our views of sunrise and sunset presented something different every day, but the one constant was the moment in which light broke over the canyon rim, flooding downward into the void.
These are attempts at capturing the light, the textures of the sandstone, the height of the canyon walls, and the mysterious spaces that went "all misty" once the light poured in against the canyon depths and surrounding evergreen foliage.
