The Raven Series represents new work that’s an exploration of graphite, watercolor, ink, to represent the physical with a dreamlike quality. Thoughts seem to me a bridging of those two realms. I’m rediscovering the use of a simplistic visual voice to connect these ideas by using one watercolor pigment, one ink color, fewer marks, less detail, and allowing the mediums to make their own statement (the dream) while supporting the underdrawing (the physical).
There’s a type of magic in returning to earthly elements like dirt, feathers, sticks, or rocks that always point to the beauty found in the simplest natural forms if we’re willing to observe. Ravens have been a recurring theme in our travels and I’m captivated by their shape, behaviors, and the spiritual significance they have for me as I’m venturing toward new frontiers in the second half of life.
